FP3: Smart Cities: Governance & Sustainability

Title: Smart Cities: Governance & Sustainability

Higinio Mora, University of Alicante, Spain

Description of Panel:

Processes of governance and administration of city and urban space are in a period of profound transition driven by the twin and interconnected imperatives of responding to new realities and improving the quality of life of citizens. Broadly understood sustainability is in this context both the goal and the means of achieving that. The development of ICT infrastructure in urban environments contributes to the creation of smart cities embodying the hope of greater habitability and sustainability of cities and urban spaces. Other areas of city management can also benefit from the application of technology that brings management closer to the citizen and improves efficiency. Technologies of a disruptive nature such as blockchain or smart contracts bear the promise of transforming city governance towards innovative citizen-centred management models. Its application comes to contribute to the creation of a smart government. The objective of this panel is to encourage research on a broad range of topics that fall in this broadly defined field.

The conveners welcome paper proposals that address (but are not limited to) the following topics:

  • smart city,
